He despises the King. When his son, Tristan, was arrested, along with Olivier and several other peasants as retaliation for the riot that left Jean-Baptiste Colbert injured, he took it upon himself to kidnap Fabien Marchal to force an exchange for his sons release. When he agreed to release Fabien to the musketeers, Captain Hugues ordered him and his men to be shot down. Only Bastien made it out alive.
