Early Life[]
Princess Henriette was born on 16 June 1644, on the eve of the Second Battle of Newbury during the Civil War, at Bedford House in Exeter, a seat of William Russell, 5th Earl of Bedford (1613–1700), who had recently returned to the Royalist side. Her father was King Charles I of England, her mother the youngest daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici. All her life, Henriette would enjoy a close relationship with her mother, Queen Henrietta Maria.
She was brought to Paris by her mother, who returned to her homeland because of the civil war, at the age of two weeks, where she grew up in exile and constant lack of money. She was four years old when her father was executed in London.
To her older brother Charles II developed Minette, as it was called in the family, a deep, loyal relationship. As the youngest sister of a king without a kingdom, she had limited chances to marry, but made up for it through a profound education. With the restoration of Charles's royal dynasty in 1660, Henrietta Anne Stuart was nevertheless a "good match" and married on March 31, 1661 with her cousin Philippe of France, Duke of Orléans, Monsieur, the brother of King Louis XIV of France.
