The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789, under Louis XVI.

It is the place where the majority of the series takes place and from which it gets its namesake.

The show takes place during the period when Louis XIV decided to remodel what was once a hunting lodge built by his late father into the most magnificent palace on earth. Versailles is in the southwest outskirts of Paris, France.

The construction lasted more than 5 decades. However, the construction ended the year Louis XIV of France died.

The Hunting Lodge of Versailles in 1660

Before it was a palace, Louis XIII of France built it as his personal hunting lodge in 1624 as part of his getaway from Paris. The first phase of Versailles lasted 15 years with the addition of new wings placed around the mansion, including a garden. Several fountains and statues were erected during the first phase of construction. Phase 2 begin immediately after the first phase was done and lasted 37 years. There were newer additions to the Château de Versailles, including the Hall of Mirrors, the most celebrated room of the Palace of Versailles built in 1678, the Grand Trianon, formerly the Trianon de porcelaine which was constructed in 1670 and completed in 1708, and the Royal Chapel of Versailles which was built from 1688 to 1708. One of the biggest problems in building the palace were the finances. Coffers were being drained in the constructing of the palace and the budget for furniture were outrageously high. There were also a matter of wars and affairs impeding the process. Louis wanted to build a palace to his vision. He was considered the Sun King because he wanted to be the center of attention, and built Versailles to resemble his image and glory. The construction ended in 1715, the exact same year Louis XIV died of gangrene.
